Well, after the highs of the Battle on the Border, there comes the lows of the Cunningham Classic. It all started at the Battle, where our main man, Paddo, broke the 1st rule of the team: “Thou shall not be promoted”. If that wasn’t enough he then goes and breaks the 2nd rule of the team: “Don’t play ball sports”. So, along with our sprinter extraordaire, Jedro, he is out with injuries for a few weeks, leaving us with just 2 starters.

OK, you think, at least there’s 2 to help each other. But no, each of us is in a different race (C1 and C2). So the awesome foursome becomes 2 solitary souls and only one of these has actually been training for the last month as I’d spent the last 5 weeks swanning around the Northern Territory having a mid-season layoff.

What’s with the weather? The Cunningham is supposed to involve grey skies, sleet and wild westerlies. Instead we got hot ( >20C) and little wind. Very disappointing.

The race, well the C1 race started very pleasantly and gentleman-like. We processed along until we got through the neutral zones (flood damaged road sections). Things then started to heat up. Hitting the final climb to the KOM split the field to pieces and then it was flat-chat to try to rejoin the front runners. Quite a large group managed to get back on by the time we hit Allora so it looked like it was going to be a sprint finish from a large group. However the pace kicked up in the final few kms and only a select few were there in the end (the author not being one of them – I could still see them vaguely in the distance).

Reports from the C2 field suggest this race (supposedly the older C graders) was even harder with the winning time about 10 minutes faster than the C1 field. Our man in C2, Allan, was left chasing for the front runners but stood little hope of catching the 5 escapees.

Bummer… well there’s always next year…

“Keen for an easy ride?” This was the text that Andrew left on my phone on Sunday arvo. Sure, a gentle roll around the river loop would be a good way to end the weekend and soothe the legs after the usual madness along Old Northern Road on the way back from Lakeside. How wrong I was! I knew I was in for trouble when crossing the Indooroopilly Bridge he decided to have a sprint against a train leaving the station and won! From then on I was content to use him for a bit of motorpace training until he broke his rear derailleur cable at Tennyson. “Cool, we’ll have to slow down now as he’s only got 2 gears.” Wrong again! Big Sparticus just pushed on along the Corso in top gear, dropping it into the small chainring every now and then to give his legs some respite. After climbing up onto the green Bridge, he still had enough in his legs to have a match sprint with a bus. He won that too! I tried to give him a push up some of the steep hills on the way home but I think it was more token than anything. I thought I was supposed to help my teammate who had the mechanical, but it was him who set the pace all the way!
